Step 3 of 3 · Step by step

How to create your Google Scholar profile

Google Scholar has a public page for each researcher, with the works they have published. All you need is a Google account. At the end, you copy your profile link to paste into the application form.

← Back to the selection process

What it is

A page with your name, your institution, and the list of your works, with the number of times each was cited by other researchers. It is where people find what you have published.

What you will paste into the form

The address of your profile, in this format:

scholar.google.com/citations?user=AbCdEfGhIjK

Have at hand

A Google account (a Gmail one will do) and your institutional email, which ends in @aluno.unb.br or @unb.br. Scholar uses this email to confirm your institution.

I already have a Scholar profile. Where do I find my link?

  1. Open your profile

Go to scholar.google.com with your Google account and click "My profile".

  2. Copy the address from the browser bar

Your profile link is the address that appears in the browser bar, in the format https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=.... Copy all of it.

  3. Check that it is public

Open the link in an incognito window. If the profile opens, all is well. If it doesn't, the profile still needs to be made public (step 5, below).

I don't have a profile: create one now

  1. Open your profile

Go to scholar.google.com with your Google account and click "My profile", at the top left of the page.

  2. Fill in your details

Write your full name, the way you will sign articles, your affiliation (type "Universidade de Brasília"), and areas of interest, such as "primary care" or "medical education". In the email field, use your institutional email (@aluno.unb.br or @unb.br): it is what makes your profile appear in Scholar searches.

  3. Select your articles

Scholar shows groups of works with names similar to yours. Check them one by one before adding, because there are many people with the same name. If you don't have articles yet, skip this step.

  4. Choose how to update

Prefer "Send updates by email for review" instead of automatic updating. That way you approve each addition and prevent works by people with the same name from being added on their own.

  5. Make the profile public

Tick "Make my profile public". Without this, nobody finds you, and the link you send in the form won't open for the reviewers.

  6. Confirm your institutional email

Scholar sends a confirmation link to your institutional email. Click it. Only after that does the profile start to appear in searches.

  7. Copy your link

The profile link is the address that appears in the browser bar when you open your profile, in the format https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=.... Write it down to paste into the form.

Check before you paste. Open your link in an incognito window. If your name and institution appear, the profile is public and the link is correct.

Common questions

I don't have any articles. Can I create the profile anyway?

You can, and should. The profile can stay empty. When your first work comes out, it goes into the profile.

I don't have an institutional email.

The profile can still be created, but it only appears in Scholar searches with a confirmed institutional email. If you are a UnB student, your @aluno.unb.br email will do.

Articles that aren't mine have appeared.

Remove them from the profile. That is why we recommend reviewing email updates before accepting any addition.

I'm stuck on a step. Who do I ask?

Write to escoladepacientes@gmail.com telling us which step you stopped at. Don't leave it to the last minute.
