How to create your ORCID

ORCID works like a researcher's national ID number. Creating one is free and takes a few minutes. At the end, you copy your profile link to paste into the application form.

← Back to the selection process

What it is

A unique number, with 16 digits, that identifies you in any country and in any scientific journal. It does not change if you change your name, email, or university. Many journals require each author's ORCID.

What you will paste into the form

The address of your profile, in this format:

orcid.org/0000-0000-0000-0000

Have at hand

An email you will keep for years. University email stops working when you graduate, so it is worth having a personal email too.

I already have an ORCID. Where do I find my link?

  1. Log in to your account

Go to orcid.org and click "Sign in".

  2. Copy your iD

At the top of your record appears your iD, in the format 0000-0000-0000-0000, along with the address https://orcid.org/.... Copy the whole address.

  3. Paste into the form

The form accepts the full address or just the 16 digits.

Do not create a second ORCID. Each person should have only one. When you register, ORCID itself warns you if your email is already registered.

I don't have an ORCID: create one now

  1. Open the site and start registering

Go to orcid.org, click "Sign in / Register" and then "Register now". The site may appear in English. Look for the site's own language selector to change it.

  2. Choose the email carefully

Use an email you will keep for years. If you use your UnB one, also register a personal email as a backup, under "Account settings", in the "Emails" section. Losing access to the registered email is the most common problem with ORCID.

  3. Make the record public

When creating it, choose the visibility "Everyone". A private ORCID does not identify you, and the group would not be able to open your link.

  4. Confirm your email

ORCID sends a message to your email. Open it and click the confirmation link. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder.

  5. Fill in your affiliation

Under "Employment" and "Education and qualifications", enter the University of Brasília and your status (undergraduate, program, term).

  6. Add your works, later

When you have published works, go to "Works" and use "Add works". You can search by database ("Search & link") or paste the DOI ("Add DOI"), a code that identifies the article. The data fills in on its own. For now, you can leave it empty.

  7. Copy your link

Your iD has the format 0000-0000-0000-0000. Your link is https://orcid.org/ followed by the iD. Write it down to paste into the form.

Check before you paste. Open your link in an incognito browser window. If your name appears, the profile is public and the link is correct.

Common questions

The confirmation email didn't arrive.

Check your spam folder. If it isn't there, log in to your account and use the option to resend the confirmation email, in the emails section.

My ORCID will be empty. Is that a problem?

No. For the application it is enough that it exists and is public. The works come later.

The site appeared in English.

That's normal. That's why the button names in this step-by-step guide are in English and in quotation marks. If you prefer, look for the site's own language selector.

I'm stuck on a step. Who do I ask?

Write to escoladepacientes@gmail.com telling us which step you stopped at. Don't leave it to the last minute.
